work more on your color palette and choice of typeface for the copy blocks.
once you choose a typeface, stay with the same size and leading throughout.
that'll help unify the book.
also, keep a consistent color palette.
you can choose a broad one, ie four or five colors, but make sure to use those colors in large areas and small alternately so that the color palette and typography carry the book.
I love the icons!! These would be great ads...for a book they need to be more uniform (I agree with the above comment) - for your palette what about doing a complimentry combo (with 2 shades/tints of each color)?
